Stepping off the boat onto the wooden dock, we felt as though we had entered another world. The rich, earthy scent of the rainforest, the symphony of exotic bird calls, and the serene sight of the Rio Negro stretching into the distance immediately enveloped us in a sense of awe.
Welcome to Mirante do Gavião Amazon Lodge, a hidden gem in the heart of the Amazon, where luxury meets nature in the most harmonious way possible.
Opened in August 2014, Mirante do Gavião—meaning "hawk observatory" in English—sits at the edge of the Rio (river) Negro, overlooking the breathtaking Anavilhanas National Park. This park is the world’s second-largest freshwater archipelago and a region with one of the Earth's most preserved biomes, brimming with biodiversity.
A Warm Welcome in the Heart of the Jungle
The journey to Mirante do Gavião was an adventure in itself. Our adventure began in Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon. While many tourists are content with visiting Manaus' attractions, such as witnessing the meeting of the rivers, our sights were set deeper into the rainforest. We opted to venture three hours into the wilderness to truly immerse ourselves in the Amazonian experience.
Contrary to our expectations, the journey didn't lead us through dense jungle. Instead, we encountered a semblance of civilization along the way. Manaus surprised us with its size and bustling urban life, supported primarily by river transportation due to its isolation. However, as we ventured deeper, the landscape transitioned into a more remote setting, hinting at the untamed wilderness awaiting us.
Three hours later, we were at Mirante. The reception area, perched on stilts offered a stunning first impression. The design choices, from the natural wood finishes to the open, airy layout, immediately immersed us in the rainforest ambiance.
As we walked along the elevated wooden pathways, we were surrounded by the lush greenery meticulously curated by landscape designer Clariça Lima - 70 native plants and fruit trees - a seamless blend with the natural environment.
Luxurious Accommodations with a Rustic Charm
The lodge’s architecture also reflected a deep respect for the environment. Elevated stilt structures and walkways preserved the soil's permeability, ensuring minimal impact on the pristine surroundings. Each of the thirteen bungalows was a masterpiece of sustainable design that incorporated natural fibers, wood furniture with intricate marquetry, and stunning regional handicrafts. Many of these beautiful pieces were created by local artisans from the Almerinda Malaquias Foundation.
Our home for the next few days was a wonderful bungalow, crafted from hardwood and shaped like an inverted boat. The balcony of our bungalow offered a breathtaking view of the Rio Negro, its mysterious waters glistening under the sun. It was the perfect spot to unwind, listen to the sounds of the jungle, and watch the sky transform into a canvas of stars as night fell.
The bungalows' interiors exuded a cozy elegance, with comfortable spaces that made extensive use of the rainforest's natural materials, enhancing the wellness-focused ethos of the retreat. Large glass windows brought the lush greenery inside, making it feel as if we were living and sleeping within the Amazon itself.
Every detail, from the handcrafted furniture to the woven baskets, spoke of the lodge's commitment to sustainability and local craftsmanship. Bathrooms designed like treehouses, gave the sensation of bathing in the middle of the forest.
Playing with Pink Dolphins + Other Unforgettable Adventures
One of our most memorable experiences was playing with pink dolphins that inhabit the Brazilian Amazon. Interacting with these magnificent creatures was surreal and something our family will never forget.
OH - and you know you're in the Amazon rainforest when you see a huge green lizard climbing a nearby tree, right in front of your room - That was pretty cool too!
Another unforgettable experience was the night tour guided by Nigel. We turned off our torches as requested, and the boat sped through the water in complete darkness, surrounded only by the sounds of the jungle—a truly exhilarating experience.
We also explored the local community in Novo Airão, visiting a woodwork organization that teaches youth valuable skills while helping them earn money. It was heartwarming to see such initiatives that function like an afterschool program.
Additionally, on a sunset boat ride, we stopped and jumped into the Rio Negro. The guide knew exactly where it was safe and the perfect time to do it, making it the most thrilling experience.
After our swim, PK grabbed a towel, only to find a grasshopper sitting on it! His expression was priceless, a perfect mix of shock and amusement. Moments like these made the Amazon experience truly unique and memorable.
We also visited a local community that was living on a small island only accessible by boat. These folks made their living by selling handmade artifacts. We were delighted to see a hawk kept as a pet and wild macaws—big, colorful parrots. The people were incredibly hospitable, adding to the charm of the visit.
Discovering the Rainforest's Secrets
During our stay, we saw the fascinating Sleeping Mary plant, an Amazon rainforest species whose leaves close when touched. This was an exciting discovery!
We also walked along an hour-long interpretive trail, learning about the uses and medicinal benefits of the trees of the Amazon forest. There were two guides that shared so much wisdom about the power and healing nature of the rainforest. The indigenous people have survived in this part of the world for generations, relying on the forests and these plants for herbal remedies and food.
All along, I kept pinching myself to believe such an experience was real. How lucky, how grateful.
Relaxation by the Beautiful Pool
One of the lodge’s standout features is its stunning pool, located at the lower part of the property. On a hot day, the pool offered a perfect spot to relax and cool off from the tropical Amazon heat.
One afternoon, as I floated in the refreshing water, I was struck by a profound sense of duty. The Amazon, often hailed as the "lungs of the world," faces imminent threats. Its preservation is not just a matter of environmental concern but a collective responsibility. It's in this moment that I realized the urgency of our role and the importance to act decisively to protect this vital ecosystem.
As day turns into night, the pool at Mirante do Gavião took on a new allure. Soft, golden lights illuminated the area, casting gentle shadows on the water. The rainforest canopy became a dark silhouette, enhancing the pool’s serene beauty.
Culinary Delights from the Amazon
One of the highlights of our stay was the dining experience at Camu Camu, the lodge’s exclusive restaurant. Under the expert hand of celebrated chef Debora Shornik, the menu was a vibrant celebration of Amazonian ingredients. Each meal was a culinary journey, from the delicate flavors of carefully prepared food to the refreshing caipirinhas made with exotic fruits like cupuaçu and açaí. The restaurant’s open-air design allowed us to savor these delicious dishes while soaking in the panoramic views of the river.
We also had the opportunity to learn about the cupuaçu fruit, a tropical rainforest fruit related to cacao, from the restaurant staff. This added a layer of appreciation for the unique ingredients used in the dishes.
The gastronomy at Mirante do Gavião truly stands out for its use of fresh, local ingredients. Chef Shornik's creations are a testament to the richness of Amazonian cuisine, blending traditional flavors with contemporary techniques. The result is a dining experience that not only delights the palate but also tells the story of the region's culinary heritage.
A Commitment to Sustainability and Community
Mirante do Gavião is a beacon of sustainability and community engagement. The lodge’s efforts extended beyond providing a comfortable retreat; they were deeply invested in supporting and empowering local communities.
Through initiatives like the Association of Artisans of the Jauaperi River, the lodge fosters sustainable development and cultural preservation, ensuring that tourism benefits both the visitors and the inhabitants of this remarkable region.
We learned that the lodge supported various community projects in Novo Airão, including the Almerinda Malaquias Foundation, the Association of Artisans of Novo Airão, and the Jirau Gallery. These initiatives not only provided economic opportunities for local residents but also helped preserve the cultural heritage of the Amazon.
A Transformative Experience
Leaving Mirante do Gavião after a 3-day stay, we felt a profound sense of connection to the Amazon. We could disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with nature in the most beautiful way.

Your Guide to Exploring the Amazon
What to Know Before You Go
Vaccinations: Ensure you have received the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before your trip. It is not mandatory but it is recommended. We got our vaccine at our local Walgreens but we had to call a couple of different Walgreens to confirm availability. The vaccine is not cheap but it is a one-and-done-for-life shot. This vaccine is recommended for specific tropical locations around the world, such as parts of Africa. Our insurance covered it.
Visa: You will eventually need a visa to go to Brazil. Rules are changing, and this will apply even if you are an American citizen. We did not need a visa to visit when we went, though.
Where to Fly:
Manaus is the gateway to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil so you need to fly into Manaus. The airport is small but organized. The city itself is vibrant and urban and has a historic center.
Other Tips:
Choose an All-Inclusive Package: Remember - You're in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the lush greenery of the Amazon. You may not speak Portuguese. The last thing you want to worry about is logistics. That's why all-inclusive packages are your best bet. They cover everything from meals to excursions, ensuring you can focus on soaking up the experience.
Travel Light: Less is more. Light clothing and small suitcases!
Customize Your Experience: No two adventurers are alike, so why settle for a one-size-fits-all itinerary? Let the lodge know what floats your boat, whether it's hiking through dense foliage, birdwatching from a cozy spot, or learning about indigenous cultures. They'll tailor your trip to your preferences.
Immersive Learning: Sure, you could sit through lectures about the Amazon's flora and fauna, but why not dive right in? Feel the humidity on your skin, hear the cacophony of jungle sounds, and witness the ecosystem in action. That's the real classroom.
Seasonal Considerations: The Amazon isn't one to stick to a script. Summers and rainy seasons offer distinct experiences. In the wet season, the forest floods, turning it into a water wonderland perfect for boat explorations. Summer brings dryer conditions, making it ideal for land-based adventures.
Unique Experiences: Piranha fishing, canoeing through mangrove tunnels, and nocturnal boat rides? Sign us up! These one-of-a-kind activities promise thrills and unforgettable encounters with Amazonian wildlife.
Respect Wildlife: Remember, you're a visitor in their home. Before embarking on your adventure, chat with your guide about respecting wildlife. Keep a safe distance, avoid disturbing animals, and resist the urge to separate baby animals from their mothers.
Support Local Communities: The Amazon isn't just about wildlife; it's also home to vibrant indigenous communities. Show your appreciation by buying locally-made crafts and products, and consider making a donation to support their livelihoods and conservation efforts. It's a win-win for everyone.
